What is the best carpet to buy in Australia?
Judged by a professional carpet cleaner who has cleaned over 7,000 carpets.
*disclaimer - this is my personal opinion and I am not affiliated with any carpet retailer.
Wool Carpet
If you simply want the best wall to wall New Zealand wool carpet is hard to beat.
Pro’s
- Natural fibre (sheep)
- Looks and feels luxurious
- Very resilient and will last 25 years or more if maintained
- Fire retardant
- Excellent air filter
Con’s
- Price (expensive)
- Difficult to remove stains (can only use wool safe cleaning solutions) which have limited capability
- Moths and carpet beetles can eat wool carpet
Nylon Carpet
The best value for money carpet fibre available. I would highly recommend purchasing if you have pets.
Pro’s
- Great value (almost as resilient as wool carpet and much more cost effective)
- By far the easiest carpet fibre to clean.
- Easy to remove stains from nylon carpet then wool
Con’s
- Sun fading
Smart strand/Triexta
Relatively new type of polyester carpet material.
Pro’s
- Environmentally friendly
- Easy to remove stains - Some say all stains can be removed with water only. In my experience that is simply not the case.
Con’s
- Price (more expensive than polyester carpet)
- Attracts oils
Not as resilient as wool or nylon carpet.
Polyester/Polypropylene Carpet
Budget friendly carpet. Carpet has developed a poor reputation lately as the carpet mills produce more polyester carpet than anything else. Nylon carpet used to be the most produced, a far superior fibre in my opinion.
Pro’s
- Cheap
- Most stain resistant carpet from my experience
Con’s
- Very poor resilience
I have seen countless times the carpet fibre completely crushed in the traffic lanes after only 2 years.
- Value for money
*It may be cheap however when you consider how long it lasts before it starts to lose it’s appearance I think it is poor value for money.
